Welcome to the SQL Defrag Manager 3.0 overview. With IDERA SQL Defrag Manager product DBAs [database administrators] have a centralized approach at managing remediation of fragmentation issues policies. In SQL Defrag Manager allow the DBA [database administrator] to automate the entire defragmentation process. And be assured that action will only be taken when it is required. When you first open the interface you are presented with a high-level view of the manage SQL environment. Here you can easily spot fragmentation hotspots. You can drill down to the server, database, table, or index. And perform ad hoc fragmentation remediation. A nice feature of the tool is the ability to adjust the fill factor for each index. This way if you spot some areas becoming fragmented way too fast. You can easily adjust the fill factor to accommodate for this. However, the real power of SQL Defrag Manager lies in the policies that can be created. Here you have the ability to set up and intelligently control how you want your fragmentation to be managed rather than blindly running maintenance plans or scripts. You first start by selecting the scope of the policy. The scope can be as broad as the entire SQL enterprise or as narrow as a specific index. Then you choose the thresholds for when action should be taken as well as how often renewal of index analysis should be performed. The filter section of the policy allows you to tackle a specific portion of the qualified indexes by percenter by number. You can also limit what is addressed by the size of the page count. The response section determines what action will be taken if your thresholds are met. You can choose the reorganization rebuild and even online. Rebuild if you are running enterprise servers. You also have the ability to update statistics with a number of different options. Now you set the time the policy will run. If you have a strict maintenance window for your environment a hard stop can be applied. So that as soon as the maintenance window ends activity stops. And the last executed action can be rolled back. The resource checks are a powerful component of the policy. They allow the creator of the policy to check the status of a wide range of resources to make sure the machine is running optimally. When the defragmentation policy kicks off. For example, if CPU [central processing unit] is too high when the policy is to run the execution of the policy can be deferred another 20 minutes. And another check can be performed at that time. Alerts can be applied based on both the success and failure of a number of conditions. For example, if a critical index did not get defrag during our maintenance window for whatever reason. We can be notified immediately instead of getting a surprise the next day when we come into work. This has been a quick demonstration of how SQL Defrag Manager can help automate and intelligently handle your fragmentation issues.
