Database Management Software

AI-Powered Query and Index Optimization for SQL Server

Built directly into Query Monitor, Idera AI turns a slow query into a specific index or rewrite recommendation, with a rollback script included. You review what gets sent, you review what comes back, and nothing changes in your database until you decide it should.

Why Use AI

Why Use AI in SQL Diagnostic Manager?

Go beyond monitoring to intelligent SQL Server optimization.
Finding the slow query has never been the hard part. Deciding what to do about it is. Idera AI analyzes the query, the table structures, and the indexes that already exist, then proposes a change designed to work alongside the rest of your workload rather than at its expense. You get the reasoning, the recommendation, and a rollback script.
AI-powered performance optimization

Inside the workflow you already use

No separate tool and no context switch. Select a query in Query Monitor and the option is there.

Workload-aware AI recommendations

Workload aware, not query blind

Recommendations are based on real execution patterns across competing queries, so improving one query does not quietly cost you three others.

Faster root-cause analysis

Hours back, per investigation

Index design work that used to mean a day of testing arrives as a starting point you can evaluate in minutes.

AI-powered performance optimization

You approve every step

You see what would be sent before it is sent, and you apply recommendations yourself. There is no automatic path from suggestion to production.

From performance insight to action, all without leaving Query Monitor.

SQL Diagnostic Manager uses AI to transform live and historical query performance data into intelligent optimization guidance.

1

Identify a slow, expensive, or high-impact query in Query Monitor

2

Select a single query or a group of related queries

3

Review exactly what would be sent: the query text, the table structures, and the existing indexes. Approve it or reject it.

4

Receive index or query recommendations, with a rollback script

5

Evaluate, then apply the change yourself if you agree with it

6

Check the AI optimization history at any time to see what was submitted, by whom, and when

AI IN ACTION

AI-Powered Query & Workload Index Optimization

Optimize individual queries or entire workloads intelligently.
Unlike traditional index tuning tools, SQL Diagnostic Manager analyzes real-world execution behavior across competing queries to recommend balanced index designs that work together seamlessly.

Targeted Tuning

Generate recommendations for a single high-impact SQL Server query

Holistic Optimization

Optimize multiple competing queries that must perform well together

Workload-Aware

Produce index designs based on actual usage patterns, not hypotheticals

Reduced Sprawl

Avoid over-optimizing for one query at the expense of others

What Idera AI Will Not Do

AI assists. DBAs decide. Always.

SQL Diagnostic Manager and IDERA AI keep DBAs fully in control of SQL Server performance tuning. Built for trust and transparency at every step.

No automatic changes, nothing is applied without DBA approval
It will not send anything you have not seen. The query and schema are shown to you first, and you can reject the submission.
It will not receive the contents of your tables.
It will not turn itself on. AI features are disabled until an administrator enables them and grants permission per user.
It will not act without a record. Every submission is logged with the user and a timestamp.

Got Questions?

SQL Diagnostic Manager AI FAQs

Everything you need to know about security, controls, and implementation.

Are the Idera AI features turned on automatically when I install SQL Diagnostic Manager?

K
L

No. All Idera AI features are disabled by default. If your organization prefers not to use them, no action is required at any point, including after an upgrade.

How do I enable Idera AI in SQL Diagnostic Manager?

K
L

Enabling Idera AI takes two deliberate steps. A designated administrator enables the feature globally, then grants permission to individual users. There is no way for a user to enable it for themselves, and granting it to one user does not grant it to anyone else.

Is data sent to IDERA AI?

K
L

No data, that is, no contents of tables, is sent to IDERA AI. It is possible that a query may have text in a CASE statement, for example, that might be considered data. In this case, the user has the opportunity to reject this submission to IDERA AI.

Is what is sent to IDERA AI done automatically?

K
L

No, it is not automatic. The user, in every case, has the opportunity to review the query and schema that is sent to IDERA AI, and can either approve or reject this submission.

Are the query optimization recommendations from IDERA AI implemented automatically?

K
L

No, there is no automation in the implementation of the IDERA AI recommendations. The recommendations are shown in a dialog box, and the user must intentionally copy/paste these. Therefore no implementation of the recommendations can happen “accidentally.”

What is returned from IDERA AI?

K
L

IDERA AI will give recommendations on how this query (or queries) can be optimized, and any index additions or modifications. A rollback script is also included.

What is sent to IDERA AI?

K
L

Once you select one or more queries from the SQL DM’s console’s Statement Mode or Signature Mode that you wish to be optimized, SQL DM will gather the schema (table creation DDL) for the tables and any corresponding indexes. The query, along with the schema information, is shown to the user in a dialog box. The user can review what would be sent to IDERA AI and decide to submit it or not.

What controls and/or redaction is in place for possible sensitive data in queries?

K
L

All queries and schema that is sent to Idera AI must be manually reviewed by the user before submitting to Idera AI, or rejecting it.

Are all IDERA AI actions logged?

K
L

Yes, SQL DM does store and display all the history of what queries were submitted, who the SQL DM user was, and a date stamp.

What mechanisms are there for user-based permissions?

K
L

Once a company has decided to permit the use of Idera AI, a designated admin will need to grant permissions to individual users.

Is it safe to use Idera AI?

K
L

Yes – there are ample mechanisms to safeguard what is submitted, and which users are permitted to use Idera AI. No table data is ever submitted to Idera AI. The resultant recommendations must be manually reviewed and copy/pasted. This is intentionally a manual, non-automated process.
