From how hard drives work, through RAID configurations, and how to configure the file system. 5/26/2011 2PM CSTSQL Server, Storage and You - Part II: SAN and NAS
Building on your new understanding of disk and RAID we will apply that knowledge to understanding Storage Area Networks and Network Attached Storage. This could be in the form of a traditional SAN attached via Fibre Channel or newer iSCSI attached storage across your regular IP network. SAN’s and NAS’s have their own challenges, but also open up a whole new set of tools for disaster recovery and high availability. We will touch on the basics that can be applied to most SAN’s and talk about strategies for setting up your storage.

Rounding out the series we will cover more exotic methods of storing your data aimed squarely at speeding things up. Solid state storage has burst onto the database scene in the last three years with amazing performance numbers and a price tag that brings it within reach. Covering the basics of NAND Flash, the foundation of solid state storage, you should be able to ask the right questions and evaluate if solid state is the best option for your growing data needs. Like every other storage technologies, solid state has its own issues you need to be aware of.

Misconceptions and inconsistent advice on tempDB abounds - even highly skilled DBAs cannot always agree on how to best configure tempDB. Part of the problem is that there is no single solution that can be applied to every situation. How many files should tempDB have? Should it be on RAID 1? RAID 10? How about Solid State Drives (SSDs)? This session will give you the tools to determine the optimal configuration for tempDB. 07/20/2011Form Approval Process: Best Practices
In your company, forms are everywhere, from expense reports to travel requests, and they usually have some type of workflow associated with them. Approval workflows are a very common request in SharePoint, and there are several different ways to go about creating this process.  SharePoint Designer and InfoPath are common tools that are used to not only create the business form, but also to run it through an approval. Depending on the business requirements, there are different best practices involved. In this session, attendees will learn how SharePoint 2010 and InfoPath 2010 can be leveraged the most efficiently to create an approval process that is best for the specific project. Improvements from 2007 to 2010 will also be discussed.

10/19/2011“Caching-In” for SharePoint Performance
Caching is a critical variable in the SharePoint scalability and performance equation, but it’s one that’s oftentimes misunderstood or dismissed as being needed only in Internet-facing scenarios.  In this lively and fast-paced session, we’ll build an understanding of the caching options that exist within the SharePoint platform: object caching, BLOB caching, page output caching, and the Office Web Applications’ cache (for SharePoint 2010). We’ll examine each option in detail, discuss how it works, identify how it can be controlled, and cover common pitfalls that may impact its use.  We’ll also walk through a handful of “what if” scenarios at the end of the presentation to test audience knowledge (just for fun, of course!) Sure, you can interact with the SMO and other assemblies directly from PowerShell, but who wants to write complex scripts time and time again? When you need to write your own customizations to work against SMO, you’ll want to make something more reusable by building PowerShell functions rather than leaving them as scripts. Part of the real magic of PowerShell is the ability to combine basic functions to do complex operations. The more reusable functions you build, the fewer scripts you have to write.

Many companies rely upon Return on Investment (ROI) when making technology strategy decisions, but few take the time to actually determine how much that strategy will cost over time. Without estimating the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), ROI is meaningless and there's no way to know how large an investment is actually being made. That's particularly true when companies decide whether to use an IT hosting provider or take the do-it-yourself route; Buy v. Build.

As with most things SharePoint, the real answer to each question is oftentimes “it depends...”

In this business and process-centric session, we will be taking a look at the topic of SharePoint disaster recovery from multiple perspectives: business continuity planner, technical architect, platform owner, and others. Critical concepts and terms will be explained and defined, and an effective process for analyzing and formulating a disaster recovery plan will be discussed. We’ll also highlight some common mistakes that take place when working to build a disaster recovery strategy and how you can avoid them. By the end of this session, you will be armed with the knowledge needed to plan or review a disaster recovery strategy for your SharePoint environment.

The tricky part is knowing what to change and how to determine the correct setting. Some settings require knowledge of how SQL Server works internally and how the setting affects performance. In this webcast, MVP Dr. Tobias Weltner illustrates how you can spawn lightweight threads to execute multiple things at the same time. Unlike background jobs, this technique uses fewer resources and allows threads to communicate with each other, which not only enables you to considerably speed up scripts, but also enables you to open multiple GUI windows and keep them open while other PowerShell threads update the window content.
