SQL Server is far from self-tuning, and it is subject to occasional bouts of slowness. Inefficient code, bad plans, skewed statistics, and incorrectly configured servers are just a few of the things that can make SQL Server run slow. You cannot account for every possibility, but there are some common mistakes that DBAs and developers make that needlessly makes the server slow.
